Juster, Norman - Phantom Tollbooth. 

Milo travels through a magical tollbooth and begins a journey to the Kingdom of Wisdom, where he and a "watch" dog named Tock try to end the feud between numbers and words.

 

Keller, Laurie - The Scrambles States of America.

The states become bored with their positions on the map and decide to change places for a while. Also includes facts about the states. 

 

King-Smith, Dick – Babe:  The Gallant Pig.

A piglet comes to Farmer Hogget's farm, where he is adopted by an old sheepdog and accomplishes amazing things.

 

Kladstrup, Kristin - The Book of Story Beginnings.

After moving with her parents to Iowa, twelve-year-old Lucy discovers a mysterious notebook that can bring stories to life and which has a link to the 1914 disappearance of her great uncle.

 

Lasky, Kathryn -  The Capture,  Book one of the Guardians of Ga'hoole series.

Soren, a barn owl that is captured and taken to a special school for orphaned owls, is befriended by elf owl Gylfie and together the two set out to discover what is really going on at St. Aegolius Academy.

 

Levine, Gail Carson – Ella Enchanted.

In this novel based on the story of Cinderella, Ella struggles against the childhood curse that forces her to obey any order given to her.

 

Lewis, C.S. (Clive Staples)  – Chronicles of Narnia.

C. S. Lewis's seven-part fantasy series in which a group of children walk into a magical realm called Narnia and find themselves in the midst of an ongoing battle between good and evil led by the Christ-like lion king, Aslan.

 

Martin, Ann - The Doll People.                                                                                A family of porcelain dolls that has lived in the same house for one hundred years is taken aback when a new family of plastic dolls arrives and doesn't follow The Doll Code of Honor.

 

Martin, Rafe – Birdwing.

Pullman, Philip - The Golden Compass.                                         Accompanied by her daemon, Lyra Belacqua sets out to prevent her best friend and other kidnapped children from becoming the subject of gruesome experiments in the Far North.

 

Riordan, Rick – The Lightning Thief.

Percy, expelled from six schools for being unable to control his temper, learns the truth from his mother that his father is the Greek god Poseidon, and is sent to Camp Half Blood where he is befriended by a satyr and the demigod daughter of Athena who join him in a journey to the Underworld to retrieve Zeus's lightning bolt and prevent a catastrophic war.

 

Sage, Angie - Magyk, Book one Septimus Heap series

Jenna learns that she is a princess found as a baby by the man she believed was her father and now she and Septimus, who was taken at birth by the midwife, are being threatened by the evil wizard, DomDaniel who intends to finish off the entire royal line.

Wrede, Patricia - Dealing with Dragons.

Bored with traditional palace life, a princess goes off to live with a group of dragons and soon becomes involved with fighting against some disreputable wizards who want to steal away the dragons' kingdom.
